Boost Employee Engagement with One-on-One Benefits Meetings

Boost Employee Engagement with One-on-One Benefits Meetings

One-on-one meetings with employees about their benefits offer significant value by providing personalized attention that addresses individual needs and concerns.  While group meetings can cover general information, they often miss the chance to tailor the message to each employee’s unique situation.  In one-on-one sessions, HR professionals can build trust, ensure employees understand the full scope of their benefits, and offer guidance on how to make the most of them. This personalized approach boosts comprehension and helps employees feel more confident in making decisions about their financial futures.

These meetings also create a safe space for employees to ask questions they might be too shy to ask in a group setting.  As a result, employees engage more with the benefits package and are more likely to fully utilize the offerings available to them.  HR professionals can identify gaps in understanding, address concerns, and refer employees to advisors when necessary.  This level of support makes employees feel valued, improving satisfaction and retention while increasing participation in benefits programs like retirement plans.

At a recent TPSU program at Nova Southeastern University, Fred Barstein, CEO and founder of TPSU, TRAU, and 401kTV, spoke with Maria, an HR director at a company with 100 employees.  Maria shared how she holds one-on-one meetings after group sessions, particularly during onboarding, to better understand employees’ needs and provide personalized benefit guidance.  Employees appreciate these sessions and continue to seek her help because they feel understood. Maria leads these meetings herself and offers additional resources or advisor referrals when necessary, strengthening her relationship with employees and improving their engagement.

Fred Barstein:

Greetings. This is Fred Barstein, CEO and founder at TPSU, TRAU and 401kTV. We just completed a TPSU program here in South Florida at Nova Southeastern University. And I am here with Maria. Welcome, Maria.

Maria:

Thank you.

Fred Barstein:

Okay if we ask you a few questions?

Maria:

Of course.

Fred Barstein:

Very good. So tell us a little bit about yourself, how many employees, what your role is at your organization.

Maria:

I work as an HR director for a company with 100 employees.

Fred Barstein:

100 employees?

Maria:

Yes.

Fred Barstein:

Very good. So one of the things you talked about is how you do meetings and education one-on-one. Can you explain that to our audience?

Maria:

I find it very useful to do one-on-one meetings with employees after group meetings, so during their onboarding. And I feel like that really helps me to gauge their level of understanding of the benefit and really speak their language and address their personal needs versus just giving them general information.

Fred Barstein:

Right. And what’s the result? How do people respond to that?

Maria:

People come to me a lot with different questions and they continue seeking my guidance with the benefit because they feel like I understand them better when we do those one-on-one meetings and I’m able to direct them and guide them, and if they need any additional resources or they need to speak to an advisor, I’m able to provide the right guidance for them to get the most out of the benefit.

Fred Barstein:

And the one-on-ones, it’s not with your advisor. It’s with you.

Maria:

It’s with me. And if they need to see an advisor or they need any additional resources, I’m able to provide that and help them with that.

Fred Barstein:

Very good. So final question. What did you learn here? And would you recommend TPSU?

Maria:

Absolutely. It’s a great program and I’m definitely coming back with a lot of actionable items on my list. So hoping to implement them sometime soon.

Fred Barstein:

Give us one. What do you think you want to do?

Maria:

Definitely want to review my plan design.

Fred Barstein:

Plan design?

Maria:

Plan design.

Fred Barstein:

You mean with the automatic enrollment?

Maria:

Correct. Yes. And more education as always. More education.

Fred Barstein:

More education? Very good. Well, thank you for your time.

Maria:

Thank you very much.

Fred Barstein:

And thank you for watching 401kTV. Stay tuned.
